##FULL ANSWER## Marnie, One of the best companion plants for roses is garlic as it repels nasties such as aphids. Chives, marigolds and tansy are also effective. If you want to plant a "trap plant" -- that is, a plant that the pests will go for and leave your roses alone -- try nasturtiums. For more detailed info on companion planting, look for Louise Riotte's book, *Roses Love Garlic: Companion Planting and Other Secrets of Flowers*. She also has a book with more of a focus on veggie companion planting called *Carrots Love Tomatoes*. Both are available at www.chapters.ca. *—Karen York, Botanical Editor* Other questions recently answered by the GL team: Growing on a septic field How to battle weeds between flagstone and alternative options Mysterious orange powder on the lawn What to do with end-of-season potatoes on the vine How to control Japanese knotweed What to grow in a dry area The proper way to plant astrantia What is the star flower and how do I manage it?
