When is the best time to pick curly leaf lettuce?
**FULL QUESTION**
Dear *Gardening Life*,
I have planted some curly lettuces and I would like to know when is the right time to pick them. I live in Kirkland, QC, and have never been sure which zone I'm in.

**FULL ANSWER**
Susan,
Lettuce is a cool-season crop that is best planted in early spring and late summer for harvest before and after the hottest months. Once hot weather comes, lettuce will “bolt,” i.e. start sending up a flowering stem and going to seed. That makes the leaves taste bitter so pick your lettuce before that happens. You can pick just a few of the outer leaves of curly leaf lettuce at a time and it will keep replacing them. Or harvest the whole head, and enjoy it the once. BTW, you are in Zone 5a according to Ag Can’s Hardiness Zone map.
