**Blueberry know-how**
**U-pick**
(continued below)
- The season runs from June to September.
- Pick berries that are uniform in colour and come off the plant easily. If you have to yank at it, the berry is not fully ripened.
- Berries don’t ripen after picking so be sure you are purchasing ripe ones (see tip above).
- Look for plump, unwrinkled berries that are evenly bluish-purple in colour.
- There should be no signs of green or white, mould or crushed berries—take a look at the bottom of the pint to make sure you are purchasing the best of the bunch.
- You can store berries at room temperature for up to a day.
- For longer storage, refrigerate. Line a shallow container with paper towel and lay berries out in a single layer. Cover with another paper towel.
- Wash blueberries only when ready to eat. They tend to grow mould and ruin faster when washed ahead of time.
