Bulb Glosssary

Parts and terms to help you introduce new bulbs to your garden

**1. Scales** Thick fleshy leaves that surround the flower bud and feed the plant. **2. Tunic** The thin, papery covering that protects the bulb.

**3. Offset** A baby bulb that grows from the base of the mother bulb. Offsets can be split off and planted though they may take years to start flowering. **4. Basal plate** The bottom part of the bulb from which the roots grow.
