GL Contest: Beds & Borders Second Place

Deborah Wilkinson from Shanty Bay, ON picks up second place for her garden that takes a step on the wild side

##Adventure Garden## “My garden is a haven for the imagination,” says Deborah Wilkinson, a former police officer, who created an adventure zone for her children.

With poor soil, limited funds and lots of ingenuity, she constructed steps with old railway ties, gathered stones to create a dry riverbed and used wood chips for pathways. Most of her plants—a unique blending of wild and cultivated daylilies, Queen Anne’s lace, purple coneflower and brown-eyed Susans—are also hand-me-downs from friends, neighbours and family. The resulting series of still-evolving beds and borders garners constant admiration from passersby.
