Carolyn and Willem Terlouw from Hampton, ON designed an innovative tiered "party pit" providing a relaxing lounge area and scoring them third prize

This dramatic, tiered outdoor living space, dubbed “the party pit,” is the result of a basement walkout designed by homeowners Carolyn and Willem Terlouw.
They chose all the boulders and had them trucked in from Bracebridge, Ont. Complementing the rocks are ornamental grasses, daylilies, delphiniums and more, all thriving in the microclimate’s extended growing season. It’s a hot spot with the Terlouws’ friends, too, who often end up congregating well into the evening.
