How to: Make a hanging tent

Perfect for summer entertaining, this tent is easy to create and provides plenty of shade

Using cotton shirting fabric, hem the top and bottom of three seven-foot-long panels, and feed a thin piece of PVC (from the plumbing section of your local hardware store) through the top hems. Attach the ends of the PVC with a coupler used for attaching PVC.

To make the cage for the tent’s top, wrap one end of heavy-duty wire around the PVC where each panel meets (so you’ll need three pieces of wire), and cut the other ends the same length to hold the circle level. Cut out a square of fabric and fold from the centre to make a triangle shape. (The square of fabric should be about six inches longer than the lengths of wire so they cover the PVC.) Then, cut curves into the two sides of the triangle cutting through all the layers to make the rounded edge. Cut a small opening in the square’s centre, sticking the wires through the middle and securing them to a strong tree branch. Tie some lengths of ribbon to hide the wire.
