The perfect winter lighting
Take a cue from interior designer Sloan Mauran and bring night to life with all-white outdoor light
When a blanket of snow covers up the work of your diligent green thumb, outdoor lighting is an ideal way to play up your home’s landscaping features. Interior designer Sloan Mauran chose an elegant, warm-white palette to transform her Toronto front yard into an inviting light show.
“Lighting your house is like lighting a dinner party,” she says. “Harsh spotlights will cast unattractive shadows, and you want to create soft, glowing beauty.” With the help of landscape architect Ronald Holbrook, Mauran adorned three ornamental pear trees with simple string lights, then added spotlights at their base for dramatic effect. The result is an exquisite winter scene.
**Tip:** “Look for simple and discreet outdoor lighting. You want to hide the light so you can appreciate the source, not the fixture,” says landscape architect Ronald Holbrook.
