Preventing suckers from a cut-down serviceberry tree
How do I prevent suckers from growing out of the remains of my serviceberry tree?
##FULL QUESTION##
Dear *Gardening Life*,
I recently had a downy serviceberry tree cut down and now it’s sending up suckers like mad. How can I prevent that?
*—Andrea Baranchuk, Whitby, ON*
**FULL ANSWER**
Andrea,
You will have to either dig a huge hole and lift out a root system, which might be extensive, or rent a stumper and grind it out. Any suckers that come up from vestiges of the roots should be cut back to the ground. Eventually, it will all fade away to a memory.
