**First, string the lights.** Test all the lights prior to stringing them on the tree. Start at the top and work your way down. Play up the depth of the tree by placing some of the strings deeper inside the tree rather than just around the perimeter. Stand back and squint to make sure placement is even and there aren’t any obvious gaps.
**Next, put up garland and beads.** Place the beads and/or garland in the same fashion as the lights. It’s easier to do this before you hang the ornaments, so they don’t get in the way.
**Finally, organize and hang the ornaments.** Group ornaments by colour and hang the most dominant colour first. The simplest ones create a good backdrop for more ornate ornaments. Take a step back while decorating to see which areas need filling. Hang ornaments deep inside the tree and toward the back for added dimension.
**Tip:** Hang heavier ornaments deeper into the tree and on the bottom few branches, which are sturdier. Display breakable, sentimental favourites at the top, away from small hands and wagging tails.
