In contrast, the reflecting pool is a long rectangle, intersecting the central lawn at right angles to the borders and further breaking up the length of the garden. But, says Dinnick, “it isn’t right in the middle because that would look kind of silly.” Because the pool is three quarters of the way down the garden, it draws the eye and avoids becoming a cliché. At one end of the pool is a bench that is almost fully hidden in summer but becomes a visible presence in winter—another moment in the richness of this garden.
