It's hard to believe, but the Halloween tradition of Jack O' Lanterns originated with the Celts more than 2,000 years ago. They would put scarily carved turnips and gourds on window ledges and porches to protect against malevolent spirits believed to be raised by their rituals marking the important change of season. Pumpkin Jack O'Lanterns came to be when European settlers in North America found the native fruit easier to carve.
The truth is, you can carve a fantastic pumpkin using only a sharp kitchen knife. But there are other helpful "tools" hanging around your home. Try these.
