##Here today, gone tomorrow## **The Ephemeral Gardens** Project head and architect Pierre Thibault invited 11 teams of local and international visual artists, landscape architects and artisans to create a garden on the theme “meetings and encounters.” They drew inspiration from their connection with Quebec history, current events, urban life or social issues to create a variety of small gardens. Contemplative and interactive, the Ephemeral Gardens pulled no punches, and were even jarring in their honesty. The First Nations Wampum garden, created by the Quebec team of respected elder Domingo Cisnéros and artist Sonia Robertson, represented broken treaties and land appropriation by enclosing a mix of edibles and resilient native plants like goldenrod (*Solidago canadensis*) and western pearly everlasting (*Anaphalis margaritacea*), zucchini, beans and corn within a chain-link fence, which symbolized the forcing of aboriginal peoples onto reservations. An enormous wampum belt made of woven plants wrapped around the fence suggested hope for the future. The Jardin en mouvement (Garden in Motion) designed by the French team of architects Marie-Josée Matte and Zora Sander boasted movable containers and benches made of metallic barrels on wheels. The garden represents the fluid communication between France and Quebec (or the lack thereof) and encourages visitors to set up “places of sharing.” It was simply an enjoyable place to watch kids and adults while they engaged in the space. **The Jardin en mouvement features containers on wheels.**
