DIY soil tests

Jim Hole dishes some dirt to find out how DIY soil test kits measure up

**MCKENZIE SOIL TEST KIT** This kit can check pH, as well as determine nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium levels. The tubes and pills were difficult to manipulate. Although the pH results were comparable to the Rapitest, the nutrient tests were unintelligible. Everyone who looked at the tubes squinted and shook their heads before picking the wrong reference colour. About $6. *Photo by Carlo Mendoza*
