Door code

Garage doors can be more than just a door. They can be statement-makers and transform the look of your home Research by Megan Primeau

**Covering up to half** of your home’s facade, garage doors are often the first things you notice. They demand attention, but most often receive the least consideration. The simple wooden door (the one that flanked every house on the block) has come a long way. Not only are garage doors now better built and insulated, but they are also available in unique designs, from modern to traditional to historical, to suit almost any home’s look; you can even custom-build your own. Before you make your big purchase, there are a few things to keep in mind. We asked Pat Lohse, VP of residential marketing for Clopay, to outline the most important factors. So consider swapping your door for a new one—we’ve picked three popular styles to get you started. **What is R-value?** It measures the thermal efficiency of the door and how well it insulates. A basic garage door’s R-value is 4; for colder climates, 8 and above is better.
