French connection

From lavender-filled courtyards to ochre-hued walls, no detail was overlooked in this garden full of French allure Photos by Janis Nicolay

Great romances, whether in paperback or real life, are often equal parts desire and calculation. The same can be said of the most romantic gardens; behind the effortless charm they exude are usually owners with considerable expertise and resolve. This is certainly true of the lyrical creation of Sherry and Larry Killam in Vancouver that began some 13 years ago. Working with landscape architect Ron Rule, the couple created a sublime garden around a relocated 17th-century barn that they converted into an elegant, modern house. **An elaborate old Spanish gateway covered in sweet autumn clematis leads to the entry courtyard, redolent with the scent of lavender.**
