A brilliant lime-green wall and some sleek screens bring an unruly city garden into line

Looking out across her backyard in the historical Kerrisdale neighbourhood on Vancouver’s west side, Julie Paul takes in dramatic views of the city, the Georgia Strait and the North Shore Mountains. But up until about two years ago, her front yard was an entirely different story. “We never had the front curtains open because it really needed work,” says Paul, referring to the botanical chaos that used to be her front garden. The 1,300-square-foot space was coming apart at the seams. Nine massive rhododendrons and an unruly cedar hedge were among the mess of vegetation fighting for real estate, while a disintegrating path that bore closer resemblance to a small obstacle course, zigzagged its way up and down confusing steps to an awkwardly placed pond that had sprung a defiant leak. **Three glass privacy screens define the front entryway to Julie Paul’s revamped garden in Vancouver. A vivid green wall hides the neighbour’s cedar hedge.**
