Her home, where she lives with her husband, Irving Garten, is also a gallery of sorts, with myriad paintings on the walls, striking antiques and unusual *objets* throughout, which she and her family have collected on their travels over the years. Her home and garden are a process of evolution. “When we bought this property over 20 years ago, it was a rundown rooming house with a rickety old staircase up to the front door, a hedge and some dying grass on the front lawn, and not much garden to speak of,” says Reiss.
Along with renovating her home from top to bottom, she created the garden from scratch—which she continues to do each year to date. “The only perennials I have are roses, but everything else is grown from seeds every spring. I love starting with a blank canvas, much like my paintings, and it grows quickly, you’d be surprised! I’m not really a patient person,” she says.
