Joy Division

A modern fence dividing two city backyards creates a bond between two friendly neighbours

It all started three summers ago. Forbes and his neighbours got to talking about the fence that divided the tiny backyards of their detached houses in Toronto’s historic Cabbagetown. Wouldn’t it be wonderful, they all thought, if they could install something with a modern sensibility that would allow more light to flood through? “We all agreed we wanted to create a translucence,” says Forbes. “And we all enjoy symmetry and the linear simplicity of modern design.” With that starting point in mind, Forbes, a communication designer and artist who creates sculptures for architectural settings, called on Mark Gomes and John Broere of Box Design & Build in Toronto to update the fence and backyards. **The fence offers a clean backdrop that suits both styles.**
