Joy Division

A modern fence dividing two city backyards creates a bond between two friendly neighbours

Known for their contemporary blend of Japanese minimalism with mid-century modernism, Gomes and Broere were the perfect fit. For Forbes and his neighbours, it was important that the fence serve as a neutral backdrop that didn’t compete with their own personal styles. “I explained to Mark and John that I’m more Le Corbusier while my neighbours are more Queen Anne,” laughs Forbes. “I’m a collector of contemporary furniture while they love mahogany pieces and landscape paintings.” When the designers returned with a scale model of their vision, a cedar fence with panels of textured “glass” that would allow light to filter through, similar to a Japanese shoji screen, the homeowners’ reactions were instantaneous and unanimous. “We said, ‘This is it—it’s exactly what we want,’” recalls Forbes. **Aged brick lends the neighbours’ yard a charming Old World look, which is offset by the linear simplicity of the modern fence. Collapsible teak furnishings can be tucked away when not in use.**
