Natural order

Home and garden are perfectly integrated in this wooded west Vancouver property, creating a calming, relaxed environment to enjoy stunning vista after vista Photos by Martin Tessler; Styling by Heather Cameron

There’s frequently a subtle, disquieting competition between a home and its garden. More often than not, the former’s looming presence distracts from the natural beauty of the latter. Not in this West Vancouver British Properties lot where a perfect symbiosis was achieved: the ’50s-style ranch bungalow is peacefully integrated in the relaxed one-and-one-half-acre garden, which borrows a golf-course backdrop of towering western hemlocks, Douglas firs, western red cedars and vine maples. In fact, if you had to choose, the garden would win out, beckoning guests to take a stroll before heading indoors—just the way Vancouver landscape architect Ron Rule planned it when he implemented his vision seven years ago. **A stone-pillared pergola covered in wisteria defines the original brick terrace.**
