New container designs

Branch out of your usual container designs and get inspired with six of the hottest new trends

##Shady Characters## Plants that love the shade make charming woodland scenes in a container, especially when adorned with mushroom stakes and moss. **Get the look** Select shade-loving plants with a variety of leaf textures, such as hostas, astilbes, foamflowers, coral bells and especially ferns. Here, Asian lady fern, sensitive fern, soft shield fern and Japanese painted fern surround a hosta in a pale grey, ribbed container to magical effect. **Tip** Enrich the potting soil with humus (leaf mould, for instance) or compost; woodland plants, especially ferns, prefer this form of feeding to packaged fertilizers. **Plants** * Asian lady fern (*Athyrium otophorum*) * Sensitive fern (*Onoclea sensibilis*) * ‘Herrenhausen’ soft shield fern (*Polystichum setiferum*) * ‘Ghost’ Japanese painted fern (*Athyrium x*) * ‘August Moon’ hosta (*Hosta*)
