‘Lightning Flash’ tickseed (Coreopsis tripteris ‘Lightning Flash’) With its willowy yellow leaves, this statuesque new tickseed (so named because its seeds resemble ticks in shape) will add a bolt of colour to perennial borders or informal meadow plantings. ‘Lightning Flash’ grows three to six feet tall and in late summer has the bonus of golden flowers held high up on long stems. Better yet, it relishes heat and humidity. Tickseeds are tough, low-maintenance plants, requiring average, well-drained soil and plenty of sun. **Zone 3**.
**Definition: Spring ephemeral** Refers to woodland perennials such as trilliums, bloodroot and trout lilies that emerge early, then quickly flower and set seed before the trees leaf out. After a few weeks, the upper growth dies and the plants go dormant until next spring’s warm sunshine reaches them.
