Part 4 of 4: Pebble dash

A striking gravel garden brings planned chaos to Tom Deacon’s country garden Photos by Tom Deacon

The garden as a whole is organized along a central axis, clearly articulated by a stone-paved path. Strung along this path are a series of different garden “rooms.” Quite formal close to the house, the room styles become progressively more relaxed as they get farther away. The Gravel Garden begins where the stone path ends. As you approach, you catch glimpses of the tall spikes of bear’s breeches and the glowing orange tips of red-hot poker, but a change in level conceals the defining mood of this section until you enter it completely. **‘Sapphire Blue’ sea holly.**
