Part 2 of 4: Rainbow room

Tom Deacon’s inspired colour wheel garden encircles a sitting area with walls of vivid blooms Photos by Tom Deacon

It is here, in a number of planting squares surrounding a 12-by-12-foot sitting area, that he decided to work with much more colour than he had elsewhere in the garden. “Many gardeners’ first impulse is to focus all their attention on bloom colour, spring to fall, and the more the better,” Deacon says. “In fact, this is the only part of the garden where I decided to have bloom colour as the ordering principle rather than foliage, form or growing requirements.”
