**Pantings**
All these plants are happy in the filtered shade afforded by the high tree canopy
- ‘Bloodgood’ Japanese maple (Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood’). Seen here in front of the chimney, this always-attractive small tree has deep wine-coloured foliage that contrasts beautifully with the light grey stucco. Zone 5
- ‘PJM’ rhododendron (Rhododendron ‘PJM’). A tidy, rounded evergreen shrub, it is one of the hardiest rhodos and the first to bloom in spring, putting out showy light magenta flowers. Zone 4
- Hydrangea (Hydrangea spp.). Ranging in height from three to eight feet, hydrangeas are very shade-tolerant but need lots of moisture to keep their coarse leaves and creamy flowers at their best. Zone 4
- Hosta (Hosta spp.). Large blue hostas such as ‘Big Daddy’ and ‘Blue Angel’ with their puckered leaves and near-white flowers bring welcome colour and texture into the shade-garden mix. Zone 3
- Periwinkle (Vinca minor). This is a tough, mat-forming groundcover with dark green leaves and blue-violet flowers in spring; it can be over-enthusiastic so use it with caution. Zone 4
