Shear delight

The cutting gardens at her weekend retreat provide Viki Mansell with an abundance of colourful blooms for her sumptuous bouquets Photos by Edward Pond; Produced by Sasha Seymour

At the front of Mansell’s cottage, on the lake side, there is an all-white garden bursting with showy double peonies whose name has been lost in the garden’s history. There are also two parterres planted with white roses and hydrangeas, which bloom in July and August. Closer to the house, many varieties of ferns and hostas thrive in a strategically placed shade garden. “Normally hostas are like lettuce for deer,” Mansell says with a laugh, “but the animals won’t come that close to the house, so the plants manage to survive.” **For the freshest cut flowers, gather them in late afternoon or early evening. Viki Mansell loves the clear blues and purples of geraniums and irises set off by fluffy white peonies.**
