Parker and his partner bought the house in 1986 and immediately set out to enhance its surroundings. There are now garden rooms holding bog plants, rare shade plants like the chartreuse-flowered hacquetia, and borders filled with Japanese maples and interesting shrubs such as witch hazel and dogwood. “In a garden with this many things in it, you need open spaces,” says Parker, indicating the circular lawn and gravel terrace. Although he has provided all the garden aesthetics one could want, it is the sea of containers lapping up against the house that keeps drawing the viewer back. It’s like closely examining a painting—you’re fearful of missing some exquisite detail.
