A succulent selection

These fascinating exotics provide endless possibilities Photos by Laura Arsie

**LATE BLOOMERS** Sometimes thought of as cacti because many species have spiny leaf tips and edges, **agaves** are more closely related to lilies. Forming rosettes, they are slow-growing though some eventually reach an amazing six feet tall. For the agave, flowering is an all-consuming effort. It can take almost a year and much of the plant’s energy reserves go into it. Most species are monocarpic meaning that once flowers are produced, the plant dies. From seed to bloom can take 10 to 30 years. ***A. stricta*** **‘Nana’** - This unusual dwarf form (12 inches) has pencil-thin leaves ending in a prickly spine, hence its nickname, hedgehog agave.
