When Mary Todd and her husband, Kon Uyeyama, moved to the University Endowment Lands west of Vancouver’s Point Grey more than two decades ago, Todd’s first inclination was to fill the backyard, a weedy lawn at the time, with a large fish pond. “I wanted to raise fish for food,” she says, having read about the idea in an organic gardening magazine. “When the big earthquake hits, I would like to be able to survive with my vegetables and fish!” A traditional water basin (tsukubai) sits by the tea-house entry.
