Tea-House Garden

What started as a simple practical idea for a fish pond blossomed into a blooming testament to Japanese design

In addition, the couple wanted a garden that would complement the spectacular view overlooking Howe Sound and the surrounding mountains. Back when Uyeyama worked in Japan in the ’60s, Todd fell in love with Japanese design, so a waterfall, garden and tea house were already on her wish list. An award-winning architect, Uyeyama started sketching garden plans and eventually hired a professional Japanese-garden builder, Toshi Hamanaka, owner of Toshi Landscaping, to realize his plan. **Kon Uyeyama and Mary Todd pause on the deck outside their tea house.**
