Appel’s vibrant masterpiece is most spectacular in fall, when the Japanese maples—20 different varieties, to be exact—are ablaze and the yellow ginkgo leaves are so brilliant they almost glow in the dark. “Everybody plants for summer, but I wanted a spring and fall garden,” says Appel. “Fall is so dramatic and theatrical, with the fiery reds and yellows. I really relate to that.” For Appel, the garden is not just a stretch of grass or a spot to showcase her blooms. In her mind’s eye, it’s a jungle with its own voice; a stage set for stirring performances; an ever-evolving canvas.
