Growing up in Montreal, Appel trained as a classical pianist. She thinks spending her youth sitting at a piano led her to crave open, natural spaces as an adult. “So much of my earlier life was built on discipline; now, if I love something, I go with it. Everything in my garden has to come from passion.”
