Their journey began in 1994 when, retired and tired of condo life in Vancouver’s False Creek, they looked for property in Langley, the place where they raised their children. They bought 80 acres of land, not really sure what they were going to do with it. “Our friends and family thought we were crazy,” says Heather. “We knew absolutely nothing about gardening.” But once Heather got her hands in the soil and Arleigh got his hands on some major machinery, they were hooked. After space was cleared and the house built, the first thing Heather did was put in a vegetable garden—corn, tomatoes, lettuce and her favourite, peas. “We used to pick them and lie in the grass and eat them raw.”
A welcoming bouquet of the garden’s signature purple coneflowers (Echinacea purpurea).
