Given a skillful design treatment, an unsightly pooL becomes a cool urban oasis

In the beginning, the couple was divided. He loved the idea of having a pool (and to this day, does laps every morning); she was petrified to keep it, imagining future little ones running around. The cost of filling it in was prohibitive, so “we came up with a creative way to fence it in,” she says. The couple eventually had two children, and the pool’s influence extended well beyond simple summertime fun. One of the kids now teaches swimming part-time, and both are certified scuba divers. **Beyond the revamped patio area, the pool was sited off to one side to afford wider passage to the back of the long, narrow garden.**
