Last August I visited the gardens of Sissinghurst in England (in the countryside of Kent) and fell in love with this spot at the entrance into the South Cottage where both Vita and Harold had their bedrooms. The citrusy colours of the tall spiky Canna 'Assaut' and the bright yellow dwarf bamboo against weathered silver wood and a random flagstone path work beautifully together. If you like this look, remember that Bamboo can be very invasive so consider putting it in a pot or use Golden Japanese Forest Grass (Hakonechloa macra) instead. Continue...

The most striking aspect of the Keukenhof garden in Holland was the intriguing colour combinations and mix of bulbs and perennials. The garden designers freshened up garden favourites by placing them with unexpected partners like this vibrant pairing of Bleeding heart (Dicentra spectabilis) and orange tulips. Continue...

An interesting border of bristly broom (Cytisus) branches with rich red pea-like blooms and pink tulips. This mix of unexpected textures and "limited" colour palette reminded me of the "Bejewelled Garden" Sarah Price designed for the Chelsea flower show last year. Continue...
