Gardening Life magazine ceased publishing at the end of 2008.

It's all about saving natural
resources, time and energy
for you - and for the planet.

With Blue Boxes, Compost Bins and a little planning ahead, you can trim your “waste-line” by more than 70% without even breaking a sweat.

Help conserve precious space in landfill sites for items still in need of a recycling solution.

The resource and energy savings through recycling can be enormous.

  • Every tonne of paper recycled saves 17 trees
  • About two dozen 2-litre pop bottles can provide enough polar fleece for an adult-sized jacket
  • It takes 25% less energy to produce a glass bottle from recycled material than starting from scratch
  • Each action we take adds up to make a world of difference. Recycling is just one way to show we care.

It’s estimated that each of us generates over 380 kilograms of waste each year, an equivalent of about 30 garbage bags! While about 20% is being recycled, there’s still a lot left to do.

    Waste-reduction tips:

Use reusable canvas bags to cart your groceries and other items home instead of one of the over 300 plastic bags that you are likely to use each year.

Donate unwanted clothing or other items to a local thrift shop or community support organization. Or, have a garage sale or consider posting your items on web-based sites that can help share your stuff with others.

Compost! Close to 50% of the“waste” that you discard can be put to much better use through composting. Give those banana peels, apple cores, leaves and other organic residuals new life through backyard composting and curbside organics collection programs.
